Tony Martin

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Tony Martin passed away last Sunday morning.

As a number of you will be aware, Tony had been unwell for a number of months and passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife Sue by his side. Tony was a Tug of War man through and through. He was a past President, Chairman and Grade 1 Judge as well as a puller in the Tug of War Association. He was also Senior Vice President of TWIF.

Tony was more than just a friend; he was a beacon of kindness and unwavering support in the lives of everyone he touched. With a laugh that could light up even the darkest days and a heart that seemed to have endless room for others, he had a way of making everyone feel special. Whether it was his thoughtful advice, his infectious energy, or simply his presence, Tony made the ordinary extraordinary. His legacy of warmth, generosity, and laughter will live on in the countless stories and cherished memories we hold dear. I owe him a great deal for what I have achieved in Tug of War and the positions I hold.

Rest in peace, Tony—you were truly one of a kind.

Pete Dyer Chairman – Tug of War Association.

The images here are from the 2007 European Championships which show Tony, when president of the TOWA at the time, with HRH Princess Anne. Tony had the task of organising the details of the visit and introducing Princess Anne to various organisers and pullers and did so with great aplomb.

Funeral Arrangements

Tony’s funeral will take place on Thursday 17th April at 1pm at Gloucester Cemeteries & Crematorium, Field Cottage, Coney Hill Rd, Gloucester GL4 4PA. Followed by a buffet etc to celebrate his life at the Birchall Memorial Institute, (BMI Club), 8 Bondend Rd, Upton St Leonards, Gloucester GL4 8AG.

24/08/2024 - TOWA Hosts Successful GENSB Junior International Tournament at Keele University!

This weekend, The Tug of War Association had the honour of hosting GENSB 2024 at Keele University in Staffordshire.

It was wonderful too see so many young people taking part, including 8 junior teams from England, with some fantastic performances from each and every one of them.

The TOWA very much wants to continue to increase junior participation further, and we would like to see more senior clubs currently without full junior teams continue to get out there and recruit junior pullers to their teams. GENSB takes place in the Netherlands next year, and of course there will be our national championships where we run junior men, junior ladies, junior mixed and GENSB weight classes, and we very much encourage all clubs and Young Farmers Clubs to enter those.

Then in September 2025, there is the small matter of England hosting the 2025 European Championships in Nottingham that will include the World Junior and Under 23 Championships where there will be both a club competition and the international competition. We would like to see a high level of participation from England junior teams competing in the open club competition in Nottingham, and we will be publishing more information about this event and how to participate very soon, so watch this space for further details.

Let’s keep working together and growing participation in junior tug of war!

2024 British and Irish Indoor Tug of War Championships Results - 13 and 14 January 2024

The 2024 British and Irish Indoor Tug of War Championships took place over the weekend hosted by the Scottish Tug of War Association at Beith to the south west of Glasgow.

For the first time prior to Covid, England had teams competing at the event, which was a good starting point as this side of tug of war in England has taken longer to recover in terms of participation than the outdoor side of the sport, and after a greater level of participation this year, it was good to see teams and pullers taking part at the British and Irish Championships, which is an important stepping stone for the future.
